Loose, sagging skin, jowls, fine lines, and wrinkles are all signs of aging that everyone experiences at one point or another. Typical signs of aging can have a devastating effect on your self-esteem – especially if you think there’s nothing that can be done to address them. However, a facelift (rhytidectomy), can address all of these issues and more. At H-MD Medical Spa in Oklahoma City, OK, we understand your feelings and can help you decide on the best path forward to rejuvenating and revitalizing your face.
What Is a Facelift?
It is an elective surgical procedure intended to create a younger appearance. It can reduce or eliminate sagging or folds of skin on and around your cheeks and jawline, as well as other changes that occur in the shape of your face as you age.
During the procedure, your provider will pull back a flap of skin on each side of your face. The tissues beneath will then be altered to create a more pleasing, youthful-looking contour to your face. Any excess skin is removed before the incisions are closed.
How Long Does a Facelift Last?
The procedure is intended to be permanent, though it’s impossible to stop the aging process altogether. Your results will be with you for years, though your skin will continue to age – albeit from your newer, younger-looking face. Many patients are able to enjoy the benefits of their surgery for 10, 15, or 20 years – depending on the rate at which they age and the age they are at the time of surgery. Eventually, you will start to notice the signs of aging in your face again.
Can You Prolong the Results?
If you want to maximize the results of your procedure and stave off the effects of aging for as long as possible, there are a few things you can do to help ensure that this is the case.
Look to Injectables
At our med spa, we provide a number of injectable treatments that can help keep your face looking fresh and young. Some of the treatments we provide include:
Sculptra Aesthetic is a filler that helps to add volume to your skin and helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Approved by the FDA for the treatment of nasolabial folds (wrinkles in your skin that result from smiling), improve your facial contours, and target lines and wrinkles.
Kybella is a non-surgical treatment that has been approved by the FDA to address submental fat (double chin). The treatment destroys fat cells beneath your chin, and it only takes 15 to 20 minutes to administer.
Dysport is an FDA-approved treatment that uses type A Botulinum toxin to address fine lines and wrinkles around your face. It is able to do so by inhibiting nerve activity in the area, resulting in fewer muscle movements and contractions. Frequent muscle contractions in your face are one of the main causes of wrinkling. By relaxing these muscles, the visibility of lines and wrinkles on your face will be reduced.
Closely Follow Your Provider’s Pre and Post-Surgical Instructions
At your consultation, your provider will give you a set of instructions to follow before your surgery that will ensure your safety and prepare you for your coming procedure. After your procedure, you will be given a set of instructions to follow to aid in healing and maximize its results.
Avoid Prolonged Exposure to the Sun
Sunlight contains dangerous UV rays that are the number one cause of premature aging in adults. Those who spend a lot of time outside, whether at the beach, working, or just enjoying the weather, may notice signs of aging in their skin earlier, and to a greater degree, than those who avoid prolonged exposure to the sun.
Avoiding the sun entirely is impossible, and not very good for your health. Your body creates vitamin D from exposure to the sun, and limiting your exposure too much can sometimes lead to vitamin D deficiencies. Whenever you’re going to be outside for more than a few minutes, make sure to apply sunscreen before you go out. You should do so even when it’s overcast because UV radiation can penetrate cloud cover.
Keep Your Weight Stable
Gaining or losing a large amount of weight can affect the appearance of your skin and the longevity of your procedure. Everyone’s weight fluctuates somewhat from day-to-day and is usually dictated by your hydration level. That being said, if you find yourself putting on (or taking off) a significant amount of weight may change the appearance of your face and therefore your surgical results.
To avoid significant weight gain, be sure to exercise regularly, but don’t go above what your body can handle. If you’re healthy and athletic, feel free to engage in moderate to vigorous exercise as long as it’s safe for you to do so. If you’re not overly athletic, a 30-minute walk once a day and a healthy diet can help keep your weight stable.
Smoking is another huge driver of premature aging in both men and women. Aside from the obvious health concerns that go hand-in-hand with tobacco use, comparisons between those who smoke and those who do not can show vast differences in the signs of aging that genetics cannot completely account for.
You will need to stop smoking several weeks before your procedure, and continue to do so for several more while you recover.
Who Is a Candidate for Facelift Surgery?
The procedure has been around for decades, and it has been iterated on and improved as time moved forward. Today, it is considered the gold standard regarding facial rejuvenation. No other procedure or treatment can address the signs of aging on your face better than a rhytidectomy.
In order to be considered a candidate for surgery, there are a few criteria you need to meet.
You’re In Good Health
No matter what kind of surgical procedure you undergo, whether it’s elective cosmetic surgery or not, your body will need to be in good general health before you can move forward with surgery. Most patients wanting the surgery will make excellent candidates. For your safety, it’s important to give your provider a full rundown of your medical history, including any previous surgeries, medications, or other conditions past and present.
You won’t necessarily be excluded from surgery just because you have/had some health issues in your medical history. The only ones that your provider will take into consideration are those that may directly influence the safety of your procedure.
You Have Visible Signs of Aging
Experiencing visible signs of aging is a must before undergoing cosmetic surgery. However, not everyone will necessarily need a facelift to address them. As mentioned, if you’re only experiencing mild signs of aging, you may be better served by choosing one of our many rejuvenating and revitalizing treatments. Rhytidectomy is usually only performed if the signs of aging on a patient’s face are advanced to a point where less invasive treatments won’t produce your desired results.
What Is the Best Age for a Facelift?
Nobody ages at exactly the same rate, or in the same areas of their body as others. When it comes to rhytidectomy, this means that some people may qualify for surgery at a certain age, where another person may not. It should be noted that undergoing a facelift at a younger age can have advantages over waiting until later on.
In Your 30s
Generally, people begin to show the signs of aging in their 30s. Whether it occurs in their early to late 30s will depend a lot on genetics and lifestyle. For most people, the signs of aging that occur in their 30s are not severe enough to warrant surgery and can be better addressed with fillers, Botox, or chemical peels.
In Your 40s
People in their 40s are usually beginning to experience signs of aging that are serious enough to be addressed with surgery. Patients who choose surgery in their 40s, while their skin retains some measure of elasticity, can enjoy better, longer-lasting results than those who wait until they’re older.
In Your 50s and Later
By the time a patient hits their 50s, they will often be showing significant signs of aging that may be too far advanced to treat with topicals or non-invasive treatments. A good reason to choose the procedure in your 50s is that your body will usually still be in good general health.
Patients in their late 50s and beyond often lack the elasticity in their skin that existed in their 40s, and as a result, their procedure may not last as long. That being said, choosing to undergo elective cosmetic surgery beyond your 50s can still yield dramatic results that you’ll enjoy for many years to come.
Can You Combine This With Other Procedures?
Absolutely. Rhytidectomy surgery is an excellent way to address the signs of aging in your face. However, it will not have an anti-aging effect on any other part of your upper body. To experience more dramatic results, consider undergoing another procedure at the same time as your facelift.
Patients looking for a full-face rejuvenation often ask if they can have an eyelid lift in addition to their rhytidectomy procedure. An eyelid lift is an elective surgical procedure that removed excess skin from your upper eyelids and can address bags from beneath your eyes.
A brow lift is another common facial rejuvenation procedure that can be paired with rhytidectomy. The procedure lifts your brows to address stern frown lines that can appear between your eyebrows.
Some patients looking to turn back the clock on aging aren’t satisfied with some of their facial features. A chin implant, for example, can be inserted during your facelift using the same incision beneath your chin that rhytidectomy uses. Choosing a chin implant can help improve the angles and contours of your face and provide you with more definition to your jawline.
Is This Effective for Men?
Historically, the surgery has been primarily performed on women. But, in recent years, there’s been a huge increase in men looking to undergo the procedure to restore a more youthful look.
The reason for the increase in men are many, but one of the big ones is that men are staying in the workforce longer and wanting to maintain a younger-looking appearance. Additionally, the improvement of surgical techniques has helped improve the result of the procedure in both men and women.
Turn Back the Clock on Aging
A facelift, or rhytidectomy, is a surgical procedure designed to address significant signs of aging on your face. The procedure is intended to be permanent, though it can’t stop you from aging. You will, however, continue to age from a point where your skin is tighter and smoother, and it will take many years to reach the point you were at before your surgery – if you reach it at all.
